ADAMS PORTRAITS LTD
Royal Society of Portrait Painters, statement by Alastair Adams PPRP
In 2002, I became a fully fledged member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, something that I had set my sights on a number of years earlier. Following this, in 2005, I was asked to increase my involvement with the Society and the president at the time, Andrew Festing, encouraged me to take over the role of Treasurer. As Treasurer, I updated and digitised the accounting process and also oversaw the RP Annual Charitable Auction.
I was voted in by the other members as President in 2008, and had clear ideas and direction for the Society, which I hope I more than achieved while completing the full 6 year tenure of the role. Specifically I spearheaded and instigated the following,
2011 - Face Facts
2010 - Representations of Childhood
2009 - Face to Face, looking at and portraying disfigurement
In addition, ongoing throughout my tenure as President,

I was voted in by the other members as President in 2008, and had clear ideas and direction for the Society, which I hope I more than achieved while completing the full 6 year tenure of the role. Specifically I spearheaded and instigated the following,
- Seven Investment came on board in the form of a sponsorship collaboration in 2014, a working relationship which I built up, with the potential to seamlessly continue beyond my tenure as President.
- Family Familiar took place in 2014 at The Gallery, Winchester Discovery Centre and featured a collection of works by RP members "paintings that represent poignant career turning points or that remember important figures in the artists development".
- Enterprise Awards 2014, highly commended in the Cultural Impact category, Loughborough University.
- SELF portrait prize in 2013, a one off and exclusive open exhibition of self portraits with a first prize of £20,000.
- Why the Royal Society of Portrait Painters?, charitable book publication 2012, ISBN 978-0-901415-52-3
- Themed Public Debates, held at the Mall Gallery with panelists including myself, Sandy Nairne (Director of the National Portrait Gallery), David Starkey CBE, Jonathon Jones (the Guardian), and James Partridge (CEO of Changing Faces).
2011 - Face Facts
2010 - Representations of Childhood
2009 - Face to Face, looking at and portraying disfigurement
- The Vale of Catmose exhibition, Oakham 2011, a collection of work by RP members.
- Social Media introduction for the Society by creating its own Facebook page and Twitter account in 2011.
- Themed Public Debate held at Girton College, Cambridge.
- People's Portrait 10th anniversary exhibition in 2010, Girton College, Cambridge.
- Changing Faces prize evolved into a portrait commission in 2010.
- Developed the yearly exhibition catalogue into a official book publication by introducing the addition of an 'ISBN' in 2008, a positive and advantageous practice which, I hope, continues beyond my tenure as President.
In addition, ongoing throughout my tenure as President,
- New website, created in conjunction with Nation and went live in 2011 after a lengthy development process, coupled with a complete rebranding giving the Society a brand new logo to signify a cleaner, fresher approach to the online presence and commissioning service.
- Educational Events and established a year round schedule of workshops, debates and portfolio surgeries.
