  • Initial Stages of the Composition and Nature of sittings

Depending upon the outcome of the first meeting I will either arrange a return visit or proceed with the initial stages of the commission. Before work on a portrait is started I like to spend some time with the sitter or sitters in their own surroundings, sketching, talking, taking photographs, looking at lighting and researching a variety of potential compositions.

I like to try out ideas for paintings in this way as it gives the compositions and figures a "real time" feel. It means I can capture people being themselves, acting naturally and interacting with each other, making things look less staged. I use a camera to help me as it is quick and unobtrusive so naturally occurring expressions and poses will often emerge. I like to set sittings in the subjects own, poignant surroundings as it adds to a relaxed atmosphere and fits in better with peoples availability and schedule.

In the initial stages of a commission sketching give me a chance to study the sitters physical characteristics and also offer me an insight into manner, body language and personality. Sketches also serve as a brief insight into the nature of forthcoming sittings which depend upon the commissions requirements.
